(HARLINGEN, Texas) – Before Michael Cooley considered pursuing a college degree at Texas State Technical College, he developed skills as a writer, followed by learning how to program computers, being a graphic designer and studying audio engineering.
“One day I thought about applying my tech-savvy skills to studying cybersecurity,” he said.
Now Cooley is studying for an Associate of Applied Science degree in Cybersecurity at TSTC’s Harlingen campus.
“The camaraderie in our program is wonderful,” he said. “The instructors help us succeed in multiple capacities. It’s amazing to see instructors who really care about their students while they study for a career in the digital landscape.”
Cooley said his skills have opened new opportunities for him at the college.
“I’ve participated in several recruitment events where I’ve spoken about my current experience in the Cybersecurity program,” he said. “Hopefully many individuals will find my presentation appealing and enroll.”
Alejandro Alcoser is one of Cooley’s instructors.
“Michael is a student who loves to learn everything he can about protecting computer systems while providing a service,” he said.
Cooley said TSTC has shaped his educational outlook.
“Every course I have taken has prepared me technically,” the Palm Valley resident said. “My next goal is to prepare for the SkillsUSA competition next semester. That’s a challenge I’m ready to accept.”
