(ABILENE, Texas) – More than 120 high school students, from as close as Abilene to as far away as California, signed a letter of intent to attend Texas State Technical College this fall.
TSTC hosted the annual National CTE (career and technical education) Letter of Intent Signing Day on Thursday, April 10, at the Industrial Technology Center in Abilene.
“Our goal is to give you the skills to get a great paying job,” said Andy Weaver, provost of TSTC’s four West Texas campuses. “For Texas to be successful, we need a skilled workforce. That starts with you.”
The students were greeted by faculty and staff while signing their letter of intent.
“I think it is cool that we get a National Signing Day,” said Preston Frazier of Abilene.
Frazier will be part of the first HVAC Technology class at the Abilene campus this fall.
“I think it is something that is really cool and everyone needs,” he said of the program.
Jesse Wilson traveled from Salinas, California to sign his letter for the Electrical Lineworker and Management Technology program.
“All of the schools in California do not offer multiple programs,” he said. “I can look into welding or aviation as well.”
Wilson said he and a friend from Eastland will begin the lineworker program this fall.
“I am looking forward to seeing what I am able to learn,” he said.
James Hamlin, of Sweetwater, will attend TSTC’s Waco campus to study Automotive Technology.
“The equipment is top of the line, similar to what you see in NASCAR garages,” he said of the Waco campus lab.
Maryvel Castillo, of Abilene, said she chose the Pre-Allied program to begin her journey toward a nursing career.
“Today means a lot to me as it is the beginning of my future,” she said. “My goal is to be the best I can and strive to be even better.”
