Terry Steelman

(ABILENE, Texas) – Terry Steelman found his passion when he became Texas State Technical College’s newest Industrial Systems instructor.

The Snyder native plans to use his U.S. Marine Corps experience during lab sessions. He brings knowledge as a technician and supervisor in manufacturing and utility fleet service to the Abilene campus.

He knows his experience will help students achieve their goal of graduating and being hired by industry leaders throughout the state.

Steelman said he is proud to be part of the TSTC faculty, knowing he plays an important role in preparing students for a career.

What is your view of the Industrial Systems program?

Industrial Systems is a technology field based on electrical and mechanical training.  Technicians learn motor controls and all devices used, three-phase wiring, wiring schematics and electrical symbols, programmable logic command (computer-based control board), and how to weld and fabricate tools or mounts using a lathe and mill. Students also learn industry piping standards, along with hydraulic and pneumatic controls.

These are all important because it allows the graduates a multitude of industries from which to seek employment. Some industries that seek this training are manufacturing, oil and gas, wind and solar energy, and even agricultural and utility equipment.

What is unique about TSTC’s Industrial Systems program?

Our program is at multiple campuses and offers the same curriculum, no matter the campus. This allows students to stay and work within their home area or, if desired, move to a different location and start their career.

What is the career outlook for the industry?

Every graduate has many opportunities and career options to choose from. In Abilene, since the inception of the program, every student has had a career waiting for them after graduation.

What inspired you to become an instructor?

I chose to become an instructor because my entire working life I have been involved in training, teaching and service. The decision to come to TSTC was about filling a void in my life. I had an excellent career, but something always seemed to be missing. After the death of my older brother, it prompted me to take action to get back in school so I could become an instructor and help others.

What do you enjoy most about your career?

That it’s challenging. There is always something new to learn, especially as technology changes.

What do you enjoy most about the program?

The program teaches many different skill sets that will allow the student to pick the career field they want without much limitation.
