julian rodriguez 372x451 - Electromechanical Technology student says TSTC sets him up for career goal

(SWEETWATER, Texas) – Julian Rodriguez found the college that would lead him to a specialized career after a few minutes.

While searching for schools that offered Electromechanical Technology, Rodriguez said Texas State Technical College was at the top of his search results. After reading about what the program offers, the Lufkin native knew that TSTC was the right fit for him.

“I had always wanted to work in the electromechanical field,” he said. “I attended a community college in my hometown and was able to work on brackets and electronics. I decided I liked doing that. One day I was looking for a school that offered electromechanical classes, and TSTC was listed as one of the best in Texas.”

What helped draw Rodriguez to TSTC was the uniqueness of the program and college.

“I did not realize that TSTC was located statewide, which is great for a lot of people. I also like the technical aspect of what is offered in this program,” he said.

Rodriguez is working toward an Associate of Applied Science degree in the hopes of returning to East Texas to work.

“I do not know what I plan to do, but I know I want to work in something specialized,” he said. “What I am learning here will help broaden my knowledge.”

Instructor Arnoldo Soto said Rodriguez’s ability will lead him to the career he seeks.

“When we had the General Electric representatives visit with students, he showed a real interest in that field,” he said. “Julian will have plenty of opportunities when he completes the program, especially if he plans to return to East Texas.”

Rodriguez said that after he graduates he will have skills needed for several industries.

During the program, which is available at the Sweetwater campus exclusively, Rodriguez and other students develop the skills needed to design, repair and service technical equipment.

Rodriguez said having experienced instructors helps him during class, and eventually finding a job is another benefit.

“The instructors have so much knowledge and are eager to teach you what they know,” he said. “Having their resources will be helpful when I begin looking for a job.”

According to onetonline.org, the need for electromechanical and mechatronic technologists and technicians will increase by 13% by 2028.

Rodriguez knows he will also be in a field that pays well. The website states that the median salary for a technician in Texas is $52,010.

In addition to the associate degree program, TSTC offers a certificate of completion in Electromechanical Technology, which can be completed in 16 months.

Registration for the fall semester is underway. Scholarships are available. For more information, visit tstc.edu.
