TSTC Welding Technology student Maris Goode is earning a certificate of completion in the program.

(ROSENBERG, Texas) – Texas State Technical College Welding Technology student Maris Goode always thought that, in spite of her fascination with the craft, welding would only ever be a hobby for her.

But then a friend — and TSTC graduate — convinced her to start earning a certificate of completion in TSTC’s Welding Technology program.

Since then, the Sugar Land resident has had the opportunity to explore her love for welding and thrive in a hands-on learning environment.

How has your experience been in TSTC’s Welding Technology program?

I have loved every second of being at TSTC, even the frustrating days. Every day is a new experience surrounded by people who want you to succeed with them.

What do your loved ones think of you training in what is traditionally seen as a male-dominated field?

My family is extremely supportive. They say it’s a perfect fit for me, especially growing up with my older brother and dad. I got into doing “guy things” a long time ago.

Knowing I would be one of the only girls in the shop was definitely a little nerve-wracking, but not a day has gone by where I haven’t been pushed to be a better person in and outside of welding. My classmates make sure I don’t fall behind, check up on me every day, and are always giving tips and tricks they have learned along the way. The instructors have been extremely encouraging and some of the easiest people to talk to.

Would you recommend TSTC to others?

I would 100% recommend TSTC to others. The employees and instructors only want the best for every person who walks through the doors. It’s the perfect trade school that teaches you everything you need to know in a short amount of time and sets you up with jobs immediately to get you up on your feet and successful.

What advice would you have for prospective welding students?

Experience or not, apply. TSTC is extremely affordable compared to other trade schools. Don’t knock it until you try it. It might be the best decision you’ll ever make.

What keeps you motivated and working hard?

My parents and boyfriend. Everything I do is for them. My parents gave and sacrificed so much for me. Now it’s my turn to make them proud.

TSTC offers training in Welding Technology at each of its 10 campuses across the state. The program is part of TSTC’s Money-Back Guarantee, which offers to refund the tuition of participating graduates who are not hired in their field within six months of earning their degree.

In Texas, the number of welding positions is projected to grow by 13% through 2028, according to onetonline.org. At 46,580, Texas employs the most welders in the nation, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Registration for the fall semester at TSTC is underway. For more information, visit tstc.edu.
