(HARLINGEN, Texas) – Members of the Texas State Technical College Police Department participated in the annual National Night Out with the Harlingen Police Department, Primera Police Department, Cameron County Sheriff’s Department, and other area entities.
TSTC police officers David Sarabia and Juan Lucio greeted families and offered free goodies to children.
Sarabia said the turnout for National Night Out was a great success.
“It’s great to participate again with other law enforcement agencies,” he said. “We are building rapport and engaging with the community so they can get reacquainted with the TSTC Police Department. It’s important that the youth are aware of a great college in their own backyard.”
Alma Valencia and her daughter, Heaven Nunez, of Harlingen, enjoyed the presentations by the TSTC officers and other law enforcement agencies.
“The TSTC Police Department’s information was a great way to spread knowledge to the children,” Valencia said. “My daughter accepted a bookmark, a coloring book, a school ruler and a sticker with easy steps to take in case of an emergency.”
The event created a family-friendly atmosphere and brought the community together through gleaming smiles, laughs and tasty food from area vendors.
Sarabia added that interested individuals wanted to know more about TSTC.
“They asked what are the steps to get accepted into TSTC, and what types of programs are available to get additional funding for classes,” he said.
Harlingen Police Sgt. Sal Carmona said that having the TSTC police officers participate in National Night Out demonstrates a special camaraderie.
“The Harlingen Police Department will always be available for the TSTC Police Department just as they are available for us,” Carmona said. “This provides another element of security in times of need.”
National Night Out is a police and community event that reconnects law enforcement with their community and enhances the relationship for a safe environment.
