(WACO, Texas) – More than 10 students from Teague High School continue to embark on a challenge this year of taking dual credit classes in Texas State Technical College’s Electrical Power and Controls program.
This semester, the juniors and seniors are driving to the Waco campus for the AC Circuits and Motor Control classes. The students are earning college credit hours as they finish work for their high school diplomas.
Bryan Necessary, an instructor in TSTC’s Electrical Power and Controls, said this is the first time that a sizable group from a high school has taken dual credit classes in the program.
“It says something about their character,” he said. “It shows they have the drive to be able to do it.”
Necessary said an advantage for the high school students in challenging themselves is they can enter the workforce faster and at an earlier age.
“They are going to be so invested in this by the time they are through,” he said.
Reid Rogers, a senior at Teague High School, said taking dual credit classes is a good opportunity. He said his favorite activities so far have been learning about electricity and hooking up wires. He said the mathematics he has to learn in the program has been the toughest obstacle.
Rogers said he plans to return to TSTC in the fall to continue working on an associate degree in the program.
Joshua Owens, a Teague High School senior, said he chose to take dual enrollment classes because he had time in his schedule. He said he likes the hands-on learning atmosphere that TSTC provides.
“There is more fun stuff to do,” he said. “I learn stuff that can make money here.”
Owens said he wants to return to TSTC in the fall and pursue the Electrical Lineworker and Management Technology program.
During the fall semester, the Teague students took classes in DC Circuits and Introduction to Electrical Safety and Tools.
