(MARSHALL, Texas) – The Drafting and Design program instructors at Texas State Technical College’s Marshall location took their students on a tour of the joint-use administration and engineering firm TechServ in Tyler on Wednesday, March 27.

“I want (our students) to be able to see these companies for themselves, that way they know that there are these companies that really want our students,” Suzy Kirkpatrick, a Drafting and Design instructor, said. “I loved how well TechServ received us.”

The nine TSTC students were given a tour of the facility by several TechServ employees who showed interest in what they were studying. After the tour, the students were allowed to ask questions one-on-one with the TechServ team.

Chelsea Collier, a TechServ recruiter, said the company is growing exponentially and is always searching for new designers. The team estimated recruits will become proficient designers within two to three months of employment.

“I thought (the tour) would be a great opportunity for people in this field to learn something new about the industry,” Collier said.

The tour piqued the interest of Architectural Design and Engineering Graphics Technology student Joseph Garcia. He is now considering the company for his future career prospects.

“I love how (TSTC) brings their students out to potentially get a job at some big companies and they help every student succeed,” Garcia said.

Architectural/Civil Drafting Technology student Angela Beach uses the field trips to gain new perspectives. She was intrigued by the programs TechServ had in common with her program and the ones it receives from the companies that employ its services.

“I was interested to see different jobs that employ drafters and what their daily work would look like, and the variety of different things we could do with the skills that we’re learning,” Beach said.

Registration for the summer and fall semesters is currently underway. For more information on TSTC, go to tstc.edu.
