(HARLINGEN, Texas) – International Update Your Resume Month, celebrated each September, is a reminder for current Texas State Technical College students and alumni to polish their resumes to help them land their dream jobs.

TSTC’s Career Services department helps students and alumni be resume-ready when the college’s industry partners visit to recruit students at events such as the college’s Industry Job Fairs.

Recently some members of the Career Services team from around the state shared helpful resume do’s and don’ts.

Elisha Seca is a career advisor at the Abilene campus. His suggestion was not to include social security numbers, home addresses or criminal records.

“Remember that your resume is your personal marketing tool that you create for the purpose of getting an interview,” he said.

Jamie Jimenez is a career advisor at the Fort Bend County campus. Her suggestion was to provide enough information to showcase skills and experience.

“A one-page resume is sufficient for entry-level candidates to highlight their relevant education, skills and early experience,” she said. “A two-page resume may be necessary for seasoned professionals to list their qualifications and career trajectory.”

Liane Flores is a senior career advisor at the Harlingen campus. She said the go-to type of paper to use for a resume is white, off-white or ivory.

“It’s important to balance personal style with industry expectations because the paper complements the content and maintains readability,” she said.

Jena Corley is a career advisor at the Marshall campus. She outlined some things to include on a resume.

“A person can list their contact information, the current city and state they live in, where they earned a college degree, their job skills that are transferable, and their work history,” she said.

Peter Collier is a senior career advisor at the Waco campus. He said it is important to pay attention to spelling, punctuation, technical terms, and formatting.

“It’s easy to update your resume and add new skills and qualifications,” he said. “Remember that your resume will follow you for the rest of your life.”
