(ROSENBERG, Texas) – A job in one of the technical industries can provide someone with a stable and lucrative career. It is one of the many reasons why Texas State Technical College is dedicated to helping students find the career path that works best for them.
And that applies to many high school students as well.
The dual credit program allows students at partnering high schools to begin taking classes and working toward a degree in one of the programs offered at TSTC. It can be a great way for the students to begin their postsecondary education while easing the transition between high school and college.
“I wish a lot more parents and students knew about this program,” said Joann Flores, the dual enrollment recruitment representative at TSTC’s Fort Bend County campus. “It prepares a student to be more comfortable with going to college, being responsible, and makes the transition easier.”
Flores spends her workdays helping students already in the program, as well as visiting local high schools to help build relationships with them. Students that start the dual credit program can take classes at TSTC’s campus, off-site or online, depending on the program and needs.
Heather Cordova, a high school counselor at Needville High School, finds the program to be a good option for those already taking classes such as welding or computer science.
“One of the biggest advantages of dual credit programs is their affordability: Students can take college-level courses at a fraction of the cost of traditional tuition,” Cordova said. “Dual credit programs help students enter the workforce sooner, leading to increased lifetime earning potential.”
