(HUTTO, Texas) – To Japan and back, Austin native Alejandro Maldonado was willing to go far for education.
Maldonado came home to work in the tech industry after teaching English in Japan for four years. He is pursuing a certificate of completion in Cybersecurity at Texas State Technical College’s East Williamson County campus.
“I came back to Texas to get a better-paying job,” he said. “I was working at a company that was consulting based, doing quality assurance and a little software development.”
That position helped Maldonado understand the type of work he wanted to do.
“It was cool seeing what people across the country were working on,” he said. “I saw software developers building out their logic, and I knew that wasn’t for me.”
Maldonado is seeking the certificate to diversify his skills.
“I’m trying to learn as much as I can to get a new position,” he said. “I’m going to the (TSTC) job fair next month too to see what my options are.”
Cybersecurity is one of TSTC’s performance-based education programs in which students can move through their training at a flexible pace.
TSTC offers an Associate of Applied Science degree and certificates of completion in Cybersecurity, and an advanced technical certificate in Digital Forensics Specialist, at its East Williamson County, Fort Bend County, Harlingen, Marshall, North Texas and Waco campuses, as well as online.
