(ROSENBERG, Texas) – Stability. A high wage. Career advancement. A quick turnaround from education to the workforce. There are lots of reasons why a person might choose one career path over another. But for those looking to have it all, a career in a technical field might be the answer.
Bryan Bowling, the provost of Texas State Technical College’s Fort Bend County campus, certainly thinks so.
“We (at TSTC) train people for a specific pathway,” Bowling said. “It is a major benefit to leave college knowing what you are going to do with your degree.”
With connections to industry partners, regular job fairs and employer spotlights, TSTC students often graduate from their programs having had personal relationships with many of the businesses and companies that are hiring. And with some fields like computer numerical control tool programming forecast to see a 47% increase in job openings in Texas from 2020 to 2030, according to onetonline.org, finding a job after graduation can turn from a chore into a much more simple task.
“You aren’t signing up for a hope; you are signing up for a ‘I want to be this one day,’” Bowling said. “Job placement rates are at 90% at our campus for this area.”
The programs are also highly attuned to the current needs and trends of each industry. With training and new programs coming directly from discussions with local industry partners and data analysis, students can be assured they are gaining skills that they will actually use in the workforce.
“Lots of industries are facing high retirement rates, coupled with increased demand from a growing population,” Bowling said. “We are very careful to only teach programs that give people those careers that will endure.”
