(HARLINGEN, Texas) – While working as a helper in his uncle’s heating and air conditioning business, Texas State Technical College student Luis Lugo gained insight into what makes a business thrive: exceptional customer service.
“Possessing the skills to do an air conditioning job correctly makes a customer feel appreciated,” Lugo said.
Tony Rodriguez, Lugo’s uncle, is owner of Air Systems RGV in Weslaco.

“When Luis was a teenager, (he) asked many questions about a refrigeration cycle,” Rodriguez said. “The hands-on education he’s receiving at TSTC makes him a great candidate to continue the family legacy after I retire.”
After high school, Lugo chose to pursue the HVAC Technology program at TSTC’s Harlingen campus based on a friend’s suggestion.
“An older friend told me he enjoyed his program experience and I should try it,” he said.
Now Lugo is studying for an HVAC Technology certificate of completion in the program.
“This is my final semester, and the assignments continue to motivate me,” he said. “The instructors assign each student a different task, and we have to figure out how to resolve the issue.”

Jose Flores, one of Lugo’s instructors, said the lab assignments that Lugo has worked on relate to real-world situations.
“Luis has learned how to resolve a common issue that a technician has experienced and how to diagnose it,” Flores said.
Lugo said he has a specific goal that he is determined to achieve at TSTC.
“I would like to replace an HVAC unit by myself and complete every step correctly so I gain the utmost confidence,” he said.
