(HARLINGEN, Texas) – What began as internships at iServe Biomedical in Houston for three Biomedical Equipment Technology students from Texas State Technical College have turned into full-time jobs at the company.

Chris Hernandez, Juan Hernandez and Anthony Vega, who are candidates for graduation at TSTC’s Spring 2025 Commencement on Friday, April 25, at the Harlingen Convention Center, recently were hired as biomedical equipment technicians with iServe Biomedical.

Chris Hernandez, of Brownsville, said the internship broadened his perspective about patient care.

“I learned why it’s important to introduce myself to a patient,” he said. “I have to explain my purpose for visiting their hospital room since I have to check the medical equipment.”

Harlingen resident Juan Hernandez said it is important to eliminate errors when working on medical equipment.

“I had to make sure I followed every procedure step by step so it functioned to its fullest potential,” he said.

Anthony Vega said the input from the company’s biomedical technicians was informative.

“They taught me new approaches to troubleshooting and repairing medical devices,” the La Feria resident said.

Javier Valdez, founder and president of iServe Biomedical, said the students were eager to learn.

“The quality of work is the most important aspect in our industry for patient safety,” he said. “The most important lesson I hope they learned was about our company’s culture and pride.”

David Sanchez, a TSTC Biomedical Equipment Technology instructor in Harlingen, said each of the three students is focused on mastering their craft.

“Chris, Juan and Anthony seized the opportunity to travel for an internship and learned from new experiences that iServe Biomedical provided,” Sanchez said.

TSTC offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology at its Harlingen and Waco campuses, as well as an Associate of Applied Science degree in Medical Imaging Systems Technology Specialization at the Waco campus.

Registration for TSTC’s summer and fall semesters is underway. For more information, go to tstc.edu.
