(MARSHALL, Texas) – Texas State Technical College’s Marshall campus celebrated Spring Commencement Friday, May 5, at Memorial City Hall.
Twenty-two students received their Associate of Applied Science degrees, occupational skills achievement awards or certificates of completion.
Barton Day, provost for TSTC’s Marshall campus, congratulated the graduates on their hard work and advised them to keep pushing forward in their industries.
“You set a goal, worked incredibly hard to reach that goal, and today sit among friends and family to celebrate reaching that finish line,” he said. “In the last couple of years, there were probably a hundred reasons to quit. But you didn’t. Good for you!
“New technologies will continue to emerge on the world stage. Be the one who sets the pace rather than the one playing catch-up. And always remember that TSTC is right here to help you keep that technical edge. Never, ever, ever stop learning.”
Rolando Trevino received his occupational skills achievement award in Basic Architectural and Mechanical Drafting on Friday night.
This was Trevino’s second time at TSTC, and he said he is planning to return the following semester to continue his education.
“The more you know, the more you get paid and are likely to move up in the company,” he said. “So it was a no-brainer for me to come back.”
Trevino said he and his family had eaten out to celebrate but he was just enjoying graduation and making plans for his future.
Brooke Linthicum and her father, Matt Linthicum, graduated with their Associate of Applied Science degrees in Automation and Controls Technology.
“It made things more special to me to have him there by my side,” Brooke Linthicum said.
Brooke Linthicum said competing at the recent SkillsUSA Texas Leadership and Skills Conference in Houston with her father was one of her favorite memories from her time at TSTC.
The Linthicums competed as a team in the Mechatronics category of the SkillsUSA competition and won gold medals. They will be competing in the national competition in June in Atlanta, Georgia.
They planned to celebrate their graduation with a family dinner the following evening.
