(ROSENBERG, Texas) – Despite Halloween being right around the corner, Texas State Technical College was working to make the holidays as stress-free as possible through a community resource fair. And, for the first time ever, the event was open to the general public in addition to TSTC students.

Past fairs, all organized by the TSTC Advocacy and Resource Center (ARC) at the Fort Bend County campus, strove to help break down barriers to students’ success in their education. While many needs can be met with on-campus resources, the local Fort Bend County community also can provide needed support. While that remained a goal this time around, Larissa Moreno, coach for the ARC on campus, wanted to give back to the community as well.

“We really wanted to share these resources with more than just the students,” Moreno said. “We have become a staple part of the community, so we wanted to give back to them.”

TSTC’s Fort Bend County campus is currently the only one to have opened up its annual resource fair to the public. Moreno said the decision came after much discussion.

“We have students and community members who are struggling with a lot of things,” she said. “The whole point of the resource fair is to be more proactive going into the holidays and winter, which can be a hard time for many.”

Over 30 resources from the community were represented, including financial aid, affordable housing, military and veteran affairs, volunteer opportunities, and medical help.

The ARC is designed to assist students with nonacademic barriers and help them to get back on the path toward graduation. Its services are available at all of TSTC’s campuses.

Registration for TSTC’s spring semester begins Oct. 28. For more information, visit tstc.edu.
