(HARLINGEN, Texas) – Taking the first step toward a postsecondary education at Texas State Technical College is an exciting moment for new students, but choosing a dream career can be daunting.
Xchel Valdez, of Harlingen, is an assistant director of enrollment at TSTC who leads a passionate team that provides that assistance.
“Creating a culture of caring is important when our coaches first meet these individuals,” she said. “That makes the transition enjoyable for them. Most importantly, it allows us to place more Texans in higher-paying jobs.”
She said her team is motivated to help students overcome obstacles.
“The team at Enrollment Services is available for students who may be experiencing a situation that is preventing them from focusing on their studies,” she said. “Students feel embarrassed to reach out, and they shouldn’t. I suggest they check in regularly with an enrollment coach or their instructors. The encouragement they offer can be a determining factor that will lead to their success at TSTC.”
Valdez earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Texas at Brownsville (now UTRGV) in 2013 and has worked at TSTC for four years.
Rebeca Villanueva-Hernandez, TSTC’s enrollment executive in Harlingen, said Valdez is known for her unwavering commitment to student success.
“Xchel goes above and beyond to provide students with the resources, guidance and support they need to flourish,” she said. “She is committed to trying new strategies to reach her students. Under her leadership, she has created opportunities for students and staff to thrive.”
